The Journey Begins

The shortest walk of the Char Dham, and the steepest. Six kilometres up from Janki Chatti through a gorge that keeps narrowing, until the temple appears beside the Surya Kund, where pilgrims still lower rice into the spring to cook it. Four days leaves a full day spare at Barkot — for the village, or for the weather, which decides more here than any schedule does.

Highlights

  • The climb from Janki Chatti on foot, by pony or by palki, whichever suits the day.
  • Rice cooked in the Surya Kund at the temple — a tradition pilgrims have kept for centuries.
  • A full buffer day at Barkot for the village, or for weather, which moves fast in this valley.
