The Journey Begins

Sixteen kilometres, and most of them uphill. The walk to Kedarnath is the one people remember — the Mandakini falling away below, the valley narrowing with every turn, and then the temple standing where it has stood since long before there was a road to it. Five days keeps the climb unhurried and leaves the morning after darshan free, which is usually when the peak is clearest.

Highlights

  • An overnight at the shrine, with the next morning free for darshan and the viewpoints above it.
  • The full sixteen-kilometre walk from Gaurikund — or the pony and palki routes, if you would rather.
  • A leisurely return with an optional halt en route, instead of one long drive back.
