Where the Ganga is still called the Bhagirathi, and still small enough to hear. Gangotri sits at the head of a valley of deodar; Harsil, an hour below it, is apple orchards and wooden houses and very nearly nobody. This is the quiet half of the Char Dham road, and the days are shaped to let you stay in it rather than pass through.
Highlights
- A slow morning in Harsil valley — deodar forest, apple orchards and a village walk.
- Gangotri darshan, with the return timed to miss the afternoon traffic up the valley.
- Uttarkashi’s Kashi Vishwanath temple on the way up, rather than a drive-past.
